General Notes: He left the family just after losing the farm. He had been selling moonshine to supplement the family income and was in danger of arrest.
George was the only surviving son of his family. He was also the younge st and possibly a bit spoiled.
In 1910 he was boarding with family members in LaGrange and working at t he local bottling plant managed by his brother-in-law Ed Hurst.
He married my grandmother against the wishes of his family in 1912. Th ey eloped to Roanoke, AL. His mother was very unhappy about the marriag e. The newly weds moved into her home, which is shown on the home pag e. They lived upstairs. It was truly a case of the wicked mother-in-l aw as far as my grandmother was concerned. Their first child was still b orn and family rumor has it that the child strangled onit's umbilical co rd because my grandmother was made to milk the cow right before her due da te.
The home place was on 400 acres where they raised cotton. The house was v ery typical of homes of that time, being quite narrow from the side, but h ad long windows on either side of the fireplaces at each end. It also h ad shutters, which were definitely a sign of prosperity in those times. T he roof was shake shingle, which is a luxury now but was most likely t he most available product at the time. It was the largest house in the c ommunity at the time, I am told.
In 1929 George was prospering and bought a brand new car. Over the ne xt few years however, he and his family which now included three daughter s, suffered through numerous setbacks. First came the depression, follow ed by the attack of the boll weevil. We have numerous cropnotes where t he farm animals were mortgaged to buy cotton seed for planting.
In November 1934 he left the state to avoid being jailed for running moons hine to supplement the family income during the depression. (Brewing whis ky is an old Scottish tradition - maybe this was heritage coming to the fo re!) He wound up in the Seattle, Washington area where his sister and h er son and daughter were living. He always had a problem with alcoholi sm and he became a house painter.
In 1946 my mother and I moved to Seattle for a short while and lived wi th him. He was a thin man, very taciturn and aloof. He smoked heavily.
Over the years his oldest child Evelyn stayed in touch with him, whent he rest of the family would not speak to him. She went to visit hima nd on one occasion paid for him to visit sister Alice and her daught er in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He died alone, of a head injury from a fall. In his will he left $1 ea ch to his wife Jimmie Lee and his youngest daughter Nell who had both refu sed to speak to him again once he left home.he was boarding with Grady and Maggie and their two children, Grady and Ma ry.and was working at the bottling plant. His mother was also living wi th them aswell as sister Mattie. John A. Harris was also boarding the re and would be the future husband of Mattie Lou. He was about twelve yea rs her senior.

Noted events in his life were:

• Census: 1910, Lagrange, Troup County, Georgia; Census: Census.

• Relocation: Nov 14, 1934, Fredonia, Chambers, Alabama, USA.

George married Jimmie Lee James, daughter of Benjamin Turner James and Mattie Rebecca Edwards, on Feb 29, 1912 in Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama. Research Notes: This was a boarding house where Jimmie Lee and her three daughters moved after losing their farm in 1934 to the Federal Land Bank.

Last Thursday [29 Feb 1912] evening George M. WILKERSON and Miss Jimmie L ee JAMES, ofFredonia [Chambers Co., AL], hied themselves to Roanoke, as the quickest w ay to surmountall objections to their plans for future happiness. The services of Re v. A. S. BRANNANwere secured, andthe ceremony was soon performed which ushered them in to connubial bliss. The following day Mr. and Mrs. WILKERSON returned to their home inFredoni a.
[From The Roanoke Leader (Randolph County, Alabama), 6 Mar 1912, p.1]

Jimmie Lee wrote in a small note book:"George Wilkinson deserted his family on Nov 15th, 1934 on Thursday morni ng at the age of 45 years and 4 months. Had been married 22 years and 9 .5 months."
Just before his youngest daughter's 15th birthday.
From 1930 to 1934, Jimmie Lee took out numerous notes using their farm ani mals as collateral to buy cotton seed. Her father was a farm manager a nd tried to help her, but in the end they lost the farm.
Neither Nell nor Jimmie Lee ever spoke to him again. In his will, hele ft each of them one dollar. He died a broken man, both spiritually and fi nancially. His wife and three girls struggled to exist without him on ce he left home, having lost their home and possessions to the land bank.

Alice married Woodrow Mckinley Doxtator,9 13 son of Anton Peter Doxtator and Fannie Caroline Denslow, on Jan 17, 1941 in Clayton County, Georgia. Woodrow was born on Jan 29, 1913 in Brothertown, Calumet Co., WI,9 died on Jul 19, 1967 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California at age 54, and was buried in Queen Of Heaven, #110, Tier 23, Sec E, Fullerton Rd, LA, CA. The cause of his death was Sclerosis of the Liver.

Noted events in their marriage were:

• Divorced: Divorced.

• Divorced: Divorced.

Research Notes: Woody was born in Wisconsin. His parents were Indian and he was one of three children. His father was a very accomplished fiddler, and won contests for "old time fiddling". They lived in the Stockbridge area on the eastern side of Lake Winnebago. His brother Stanley (Chub) was also a musician and the two boys formed a band called the Sickle Swingers. Woody played five instruments at the time - accordion,
Times were hard and a musician friend of Woody's named Curly Hicks moved to Atlanta, GA. Soon he was encouraging Woody to come down and join him. Chub declined but Woody did join Curly. Woody wrote songs and had at least two published by Rose Acuff. We have a photocopy ofa 78rpm recorded on the Bluebird label (later RCA) by Curly Hicks featuring Woody Doxtator. We also have a tape of two fox trots Woody recorded.
During the war years (World War II) Woody played in hotel lounges as well as on the Merry Go Round, a noonday radio show. We have an article about him featured in the Atlanta Journal Constitution entertainment magazine. Some of the information may be embroidered but accordingto family members, most sounds true.
Woody left Atlanta and went to Knoxville where he also played on the Merry Go Round with Hank Williams and Chet Atkins. Chet was just starting out at the time (about 18). We have a group photo which includesthe two of them. He met White and married her and when she became pregnant, he told her he would leave if she didn't abort. She didn't and he did. Angelia Doxtator Riddle is the child by that marriage.
Later on I have heard that he played as the lead in act for Woody Herman and also for Liberace.
He moved to Billings, Montana at one point, where he got drunk in thewrong part of town and wound up in the hospital. There he met his 5th wife Laura, who was a nurse.
In the late 1950s Woody Junior went to Sacramento to visit our Dad. He spent about a week with him. It was awkward after twenty years of absence and Woody Junior did not come away feeling that he had gained much from the visit.

No one knows who wife #4 was.
