Obituary for Neal Johnson WIlkinson
Died June 3rd, 1887
The subject of this sketch was born September 21st, 1842 near Long Cane in this county. He grew up there, attending the neighborhood school s. In 1870 he was married to Ava Clifford Stinson. For three years he co ntinued to live near Long Cane, but in 1873 moved to Harrisonville, the ho me of his mother-in-law. About a year ago, on account of his wife's heal th he moved to Hogansville, where he was residing at the time of his deat h. He had been sick quite three weeks with the fever, from which scarce ly a family has been excepted, it being almost an epidemic.
Few men have died in our town who were missed more truly than will bet he deceased by those who knew him intimately.
He was a quiet unobtrusive man of a genial disposition; avoiding all perso nalities and enemities, with malice toward none and a friendly feeling f or all. At home in the bosom of his family these traits wereunusually pr ominent, thus his wife will miss an affectionate husband, his father the c are of a kind father.
At an early age, when just on the threshold of manhood, the deceased ma de a confession of religion and joined the Baptist Church. How well he li ved up to the requirements of the new life, can best by judged by the mann er of his death. The writer will long remember how he called him to th is bedside and took firm hold of his hand and calmly stated his willingne ss to go in obedience to God's command. He protested that this resignati on and confidence came from no good acts in his life, but from faith and t rust in the power of the redemption of Christ. Such was the effect of th is testimony that since death has tocome, one must confess that to d ie a Christian is beautiful.
It is pleasant to know too that his wife and four children, two boys and t wo girls, are left fairly provided with this worlds goods. And while symp athizing with them, we wish them a continuation of God's provident care.

A Friend.War experience: in the roster of the 4th Inf. Regt. Co. B,he would ha ve been in Virginia, Maryland, and Gettysburg during the war. Part of t he 4th was from Troup county.
18 years old - right before war. Still living at home.Enlisted with the 4 Georgia Infantry, Company B - LaGrange Light GuardsHe was sick and furloughed 8/31/1864. He has Distinguished Service on h is record. He went in as a private and left as a private. He moved from Long Cane to Harrisonville. His wife's family were from th at area of the county.
